City Schools Launch Year of the Environment
The Year of the Environment – that's the last of the successful series of "Years of…" run by the city's Education service and the fitting choice for the new millennium. Throughout 2000, pupils, teachers and parents will be working with environmental organizations to stimulate and influence young people's interest in the world around them.
In Touch with Nature
Springfield Environmental Education Centre is designed specifically for pupils with physical and sensory disabilities who might find it difficult to use similar environments. The centre, set in an old walled garden at Knowle, has ten acres of grounds with different inhabitants including woodland, a lake, a meadow, a stream, ponds and a river. There is full access to all these areas and pupils in wheelchairs can even go into the river and “paddle” or dip along with their more able-bodied friends. Blind or partially sighted pupils can also enjoy sounds and smells by taking a safe, tactile walk through the natural woodland. The center offers a range of day programmes designed to introduce pupils to the rich diversity of the world and to encourage understanding of its ecology
